On the day of the casting,
Jennie, John Grayson Rogers' daughter, came out wearing her father's favorite fishing cap
holding his Memorial Plaque. |
 |
Jennie took an active part
in placing her father's remains into his Memorial Reef. |
 |
Later, the whole family
joined together to hold hands with Garyson one last time. (The families that attend the
casting often make hand prints in the concrete.) |
 |
On April 28, 2003 the
Memorial Reef is ready to go. After one or two weather delays the sky is bright and
the sea is calm as we head to sea. |
 |
The family members who
chartered this special placement are present to see to it that Grayson's final wish is
fulfilled. |
 |
Many of Grayson's sea
faring friends came out to see him off and to say one last goodbye to a man who loved
fishing and whose work to preserve the ocean that he loved continued. |
 |
The Memorial is lowered
into the water to its final resting place. |
 |
After the Memorial Reef is
placed, Grayson's name is announced and flowers were tossed into the sea. The boat's horn
is sounded three times as is tradition at sea when one is laid to rest. Afterwards
John F. Kennedy's " the Sea" is read. |
 |
The journey back to the
dock is a time for reflection and to remember a great man and his life. |
